How is my carbon footprint computed?
A:
Your carbon footprint is computed by taking the amount of electricity you consume, the amount of heating oil you use and the amount of automotive fuel you use. Each of these has a known carbon emissions rate. Ideally this would be taken by adding up a total year of usage, but we understand that some people may not have access to all of their historic bills. In such cases we take one months usage and multiply by 13 to allow for unknown fluctuations in usage.

How are my offsets calculated?
A:
Offsets are sold in 1 ton increments. We take your carbon footprint rounded up to the nearest whole ton and that represents the number of offsets you will need to buy.
Q:
How many trees are planted for each ton of carbon offset?
A:
We calculate based on the assumption that a Jatropha tree will balance, by displacement, carbon and other greenhouse gases through the oil and other byproducts it produces. We calculate that 2.9838 kilo per tree of carbon per year over a 40 year period will be balanced per tree. So one tree then absorbs or displaces 119.355 kilos of carbon over its lifetime. This works out to approximately 9 trees per ton of carbon.
Q:
What kind of guarantees do i have that the trees will stay planted and well cared for?
A:
GroPower will undergo an annual audit process via a third party auditor to verify the number of trees planted and maintained.
Q:
What happens if my trees die or are removed?
A:
GroPower will be insuring the plantings against that eventuality. Any trees that die or are removed will be replanted.
Q:
What happens with the oil and byproducts harvested?
A:
GroPower sells the products harvested. You, the buyer of the offset, will receive an annual credit amounting to 50% of the profits generated from those sales.Q:
What can I do with the credits I receive from the oil and byproduct sales?
A:
You can donate them to one of the charities we sponsor, or apply them against future offsets or receive a check in the amount of the credit issued. The choice is up to you.
