How it works
When you place your order for carbon offsets, GroPower plants a predetermined number of trees in order to provide those offsets (approximately 9 trees per ton of offset). Over the life time of the tree (40-50 years) it will breathe in carbon and breathe out oxygen. The carbon dioxide a tree breathes in is locked away within the tree itself and the soil.
As it is unclear exactly how much carbon is absorbed by a tree and what conditions affect it we do not count that carbon, instead we look at what the trees produce.
The trees we use are Jatropha trees which produce an oil used in making biodiesel. By contributing to the production of biodiesel you are displacing carbon that would have otherwise been released from the burning of fossil fuels generating an additional carbon offset.
Another product from the trees is the residue from the oil extraction called seedcake which can be used as a fertilizer displacing inorganic fertilizers and the nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas 310 times more potent than carbon) they release.
All waste biomass left over from pruning and harvesting is converted into charcoal briquettes that will be used as a solid fuel in residential and industrial applications again displacing further amounts of carbon dioxide emissions
Between the carbon displaced from the charcoal briquettes and biodiesel and the nitrous oxide displaced we calculate 2.9838 kilo per tree of carbon per year over a 40 year period will be balanced per tree. So one tree balances 119.355 kilos of carbon over its lifetime. This works out to approximately 9 trees per ton of carbon.
Yearly Offset
What we do is compute your carbon footprint, or the amount of carbon your lifestyle or business produces for that year and plant enough trees to offset that carbon. This offset takes place over the lifetime of the trees so you are balancing the carbon you released this year over the course of 40 years rather than immediately. We call this kind of offset a deferred yearly offset as your offset is being generated over time and in order to stay carbon neutral each year you will need to purchase new offsets each year.
Lifetime Offset
If you want a more immediate and lifetime option for your carbon you can buy a lifetime offset. A lifetime offset means that we plant enough trees to offset each year the carbon you produced IN THAT year. Of course each year the trees will continue absorbing carbon so a lifetime offset means that unless your carbon production increases; you can become carbon neutral for 40 years with a one time purchase of carbon offsets. To ensure you remain carbon neutral we will conduct a carbon survey each year and if there has been an increase in your carbon emissions you can 'top up' your lifetime offset by purchasing enough additional carbon to compensate.
Profit Naturally
When you buy a Carbon offset you also receive the oil and byproduct rights in perpetuity for the life of the trees we plant on your behalf. You will receive a credit equal to 50% of the profits of the produce sold annually for the productive life of the trees. What you do with that credit is up to you. You can donate it to a charity, apply it against future offsets or have us send you a check for the amount of the credit.
