Small ways we can change:

  • Adjust your hot water heater reducing the temperature down to 120 F and make sure it is properly insulated.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water. Hot water is only really needed for very dirty or greasy items.
  • Shut down and unplug electronic devices, idle computers alone are estimated to generate generate 45 million metric tons of CO2 per year from unnecessary electricity usage. Unplug items like computers, printers and scanners, hair dryers, coffee pots, TVs, DVD players, stereos and cell phone chargers. Turn off unnecessary lights.
  • Instead of using a clothes dryer, Hang clothes out to dry.
  • Improve your refrigerator usage: Clean up the top, place it in a cool place, let hot foods cool down before putting them in. Keep the coils clean and defrost on a regular basis.
  • Keep an eye on your central heating and air-conditioning. Just a couple of degrees change in your thermostat can reduce you CO2 by emissions by nearly a ton. Increase the thermostat setting in the summer and wear cooler clothes. Use fans where possible. In the winter wear layers to keep warm and decrease the thermostat setting.
  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs, switch to compact florescent bulbs and save almost 100 pounds of CO2 per light bulb.
  • Reuse plastic shopping bags as trash bags and save the carbon that would be used in their manufacture.
  • Recycle. Less garbage and more reuse means less carbon released in manufacturing and transporting new goods and in transporting garbage.
  • Take a shower instead of a bath, showers use less water.
  • Install a low flow shower head: Showers account for 2/3 of water heating costs. Change your shower heads and you will use and heat less water
  • Remove yourself from junk mail lists, yes its not your fault that you are sent junk mail, but you can still cut it out and reduce the number of trees cut down and the carbon generated.
  • Use a mechanical lawn mower instead of a gas powered one. You will get some exercise and help the environment.
  • Install double paned windows to increase the energy efficiency of your house.
  • Update the insulation of your home.
  • When replacing appliances buy eco-friendly ones.
  • Use public transportation like buses or trains for longer trips.
  • Walk, ride a bicycle or a scooter for short trips.
  • Eat locally grown, unprocessed food. Most of what you buy at the supermarket has travelled an average 1500 miles to get to you. Food that is not processed and has had to travel shorter distances are not only fresher and better for you, but they will have a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Keep your car in good repair including changing oil, air filters and making sure tires are properly inflated.
  • Talk with your wallet. When you have the option: buy from environmentally aware and responsible businesses. Let local businesses know that you want them to take responsibility for their carbon footprint as well.
  • When possible buy items with smaller packaging, reducing the amount of garbage you have to throw out.

Big steps you can take:

  • Make your next car a smaller or a hybrid car.
  • Use biofuel blends instead of ordinary gasoline and diesel.
  • Buy a solar water heater.
  • Ask you electric company if they have a green energy option.
  • Install a small wind turbine or solar panels to provide electricity for your home.
  • Get active politically. Do it nationally: Write your congressman or representative and demand tougher legislation for the environment. Do it locally, push for greener laws in local municipalities and cities.
  • Spread the word. Talk to your friends and neighbours, tell them how important it is and help encourage them to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • What you cannot reduce, offset.
