Calculating your carbon footprint lets you know how much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases you are releasing into the atmosphere.
Why does that matter?
Because carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming which is leading us to dramatic climate change.
How do I calculate my carbon footprint?
Follow the links at the right side or bottom of this page, they will lead you to our carbon calculators. You will need at least your last months utility bills for your home or business; a full years bills is better as it will give you a more accurate analysis of your carbon footprint. You will need at least a months gas bills for your car if you want to offset the carbon from your driving.
What do I do after I offset my carbon?
You can take a number of steps to reduce your footprint going forward. A starting list of ideas can be found here: Tips to reduce emissions.
After reducing what you can you should then consider offsetting the rest.
This of course only affects the carbon you produce from this day going forward. It does nothing to reduce the footprint from the previous year.
So what can I do about my carbon footprint from the previous year?
You can buy a carbon offset and go carbon neutral. After you do your carbon calculation you will be given the opportunity to purchase an offset for the full amount.
What is a carbon offset?
Good question. A carbon offset is a method of balancing your carbon footprint so that for every ton of carbon you release each year that much carbon is absorbed or displaced elsewhere; leaving your carbon balance at zero. This is called being carbon neutral.
Are carbon offsets a perfect solution?
There are no perfect solutions. In fact one solution by itself will never be enough. Carbon offsets are just one solution; a starting point. They are best used when combined with other efforts to reduce your emissions.
